German Two-Part Conjunctions

Use sowohl … als auch, weder … noch, entweder … oder and more to connect ideas precisely.

Two-part conjunctions link two words, phrases or clauses with a fixed pair. They sound polished and are common in writing, emails and exams.

The five pairs

  • bothsowohl … als auchboth … and

Linking words and phrases

Most often the pair connects two parts of one sentence. The verb stays in position 2.

  • weder … noch is already negative: no nicht, no kein.
  • No comma inside sowohl … als auch or weder … noch.
  • Ich spreche sowohl Englisch als auch Spanisch.

    I speak both English and Spanish.

  • Wir haben weder Zeit noch Geld für den Urlaub.

    We have neither time nor money for a holiday.

  • Du kannst entweder heute oder morgen kommen.

    You can come either today or tomorrow.

Linking whole clauses

zwar and nicht nur sit inside the first clause. aber, sondern and oder open the second clause at position 0.

  • Put a comma before aber and sondern.
  • Entweder du kommst mit, oder du bleibst hier.

    Either you come along, or you stay here.

  • Die Wohnung ist zwar klein, aber sie ist sehr hell.

    The flat is small, it's true, but it's very bright.

  • Er kocht nicht nur gut, sondern backt auch Brot.

    He not only cooks well but also bakes bread.

Common mistakes

  • ✗ Ich habe weder keine Zeit noch kein Geld.

    ✓ Ich habe weder Zeit noch Geld.

    weder … noch is already negative; drop kein.

  • ✗ Sie ist nicht nur klug, aber auch lustig.

    ✓ Sie ist nicht nur klug, sondern auch lustig.

    nicht nur pairs with sondern auch, not aber.

  • ✗ Ich mag sowohl Katzen und Hunde.

    ✓ Ich mag sowohl Katzen als auch Hunde.

    sowohl pairs with als auch, never with und.

Questions learners ask

What's the difference between sowohl … als auch and und?

The meaning is the same, but sowohl … als auch stresses that both parts count. It sounds more formal than a simple und.

What does zwar … aber mean?

It admits one point and then contrasts it: 'it's true that …, but …'. zwar sits in the first clause, aber starts the second.
