The German Stative Passive
Describe results with sein + participle and tell them apart from the werden passive for actions in progress.
The stative passive (Zustandspassiv) describes a state that results from an action: Die Tür ist geöffnet. The werden passive describes the action itself: Die Tür wird geöffnet.
sein + participle = a result
- Form: sein + past participle.
- Focus: the finished state, not the action.
- English often says 'is' + adjective: is closed.
Das Geschäft ist heute geschlossen.
The shop is closed today.
Der Tisch ist schon gedeckt.
The table is already laid.
State vs process
Process: werden
- presentwird geöffnetis being opened
- pastwurde geöffnetwas opened
State: sein
- presentist geöffnetis open
- pastwar geöffnetwas open
Die Fenster werden gerade geputzt.
The windows are being cleaned right now.

Past states and signs
The past stative uses war + participle. You'll see the stative passive a lot on signs and notices.
Als wir ankamen, war das Zimmer schon reserviert.
When we arrived, the room was already booked.
Rauchen ist hier verboten.
Smoking is forbidden here.
Not the same as the perfect
- Only verbs with an accusative object form it.
- Er ist gefahren is active perfect, not passive.
- Perfect passive adds worden: ist geschlossen worden.

A finished state needs sein, not werden.
