German Dative Prepositions
Know the eight dative prepositions by heart, use dem, der and mir/dir after them, and say zum, zur, beim and vom naturally.
These prepositions always take the dative, whether there's movement or not. That makes them easier than two-way prepositions: learn the list once and the case is fixed.
They are also some of the most frequent words in German, so their contractions (zum, zur, beim, vom) come up everywhere.
Eight prepositions, always dative
aus, bei, mit, nach, seit, von, zu and gegenüber always take the dative. Movement doesn't change anything.

Questions learners ask
How do I remember the dative prepositions?
Many learners sing 'aus, bei, mit, nach, seit, von, zu' to the tune of The Blue Danube. Add gegenüber as the eighth.
When do I use zum and when zur?
zum is zu dem, for masculine and neuter nouns: zum Bahnhof. zur is zu der, for feminine nouns: zur Post.
Is nach always dative?
Yes, nach always takes the dative. With cities and most countries there's simply no article: nach Berlin, nach Spanien.
