Nach vs Zu in German
Say where you're going with the right word: nach, zu or in, including nach Hause and countries with an article.
English says 'go to' for everything. German picks nach, zu or in depending on the kind of place.
The rule is short: nach for place names, zu for people and places you visit, in for going inside or countries with an article.
nach: cities, countries, home
Use nach with city names, country names without an article and directions. Plus one fixed phrase: nach Hause.
Morgen fliegen wir nach Madrid.
Tomorrow we're flying to Madrid.
Ich gehe jetzt nach Hause.
I'm going home now.
Fahren Sie an der Ampel nach links.
Turn left at the traffic lights.
zu: people, shops, buildings
Use zu for people and for places you visit, like shops, the station or the doctor. It takes the dative, so you'll mostly see zum and zur.
Ich gehe heute zu meiner Freundin.
I'm going to my friend's today.
Wir müssen noch zum Bahnhof.
We still have to go to the station.
