German Modal Verbs

Conjugate all six modals plus möchten, put the infinitive in the right place and stop mixing up muss nicht and darf nicht.

Modal verbs like können and müssen add meaning to another verb: ability, obligation, permission or wish.

The rule is simple: the modal is conjugated in position 2 and the main verb waits at the end as an infinitive.

Modal in position 2, infinitive at the end

  • Conjugate the modal verb in position 2.
  • Put the main verb at the end, unchanged.
  • No zu before the infinitive.
  • Separable verbs stay joined: aufstehen, anrufen.
  • Ich kann heute nicht kommen.

    I can't come today.

  • Wir müssen um sechs aufstehen.

We have to get up at six.
