Use wegen, trotz, während and co. with the genitive in writing, and know when the dative is fine in speech.
A small set of prepositions takes the genitive in standard German. You'll see them in emails, news, notices and exams.
In speech many Germans use the dative instead, so you need to know both registers.

Questions learners ask
Is 'wegen dem' wrong?
In speech it's normal and widely accepted. In formal writing and exams, stick to wegen des.
Is trotz genitive or dative?
Standard German uses the genitive: trotz des Wetters. The dative is colloquial, though the word trotzdem comes from it.
What's the difference between statt and anstatt?
There's none in meaning; anstatt just sounds a little more formal. Both also work with zu + infinitive: statt zu arbeiten.
